Abby's Positivity Corner: Sneaker Soiree 2025

Positivity and gratitude are two of the most important things in my life. They shape my mindset, help me navigate challenges, and remind me to appreciate the good in every day. As a senior at The Ohio State University, graduating with a degree in Human Resources and a minor in Leadership Studies, I had the opportunity to channel my passion for gratitude and positivity into my leadership capstone project. My professor encouraged us to pursue something meaningful to us, and I knew right away that I wanted to create something that embodied the power of a positive mindset.

When brainstorming potential organizations to collaborate with, Girls on the Run (GOTR) immediately came to mind. I first heard about GOTR through Women in Business (WIB), an organization I’m involved with on campus. WIB frequently partners with GOTR for volunteer events, and my roommate, a former intern at GOTR, spoke highly of her experience. She found the organization’s mission empowering, and I wanted to find a way to contribute.

I reached out to Executive Director Sarah Hider to propose my idea: a positivity and gratitude wall. She loved the concept, and together we envisioned a way to incorporate donors and the young girls in the program.

At the Sneaker Soirée, I created a virtual positivity/gratitude wall, filled with colorful digital post-it notes. Guests could contribute by answering one of two questions: “What is something you are grateful for?” or “What is something positive that has happened recently?” During the VIP event, this board was projected on a wall, creating a visual celebration of gratitude. I approached guests, inviting them to participate in my project, and was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and willingness to share. Over 35 guests contributed, sharing their gratitude and positivity.

Through this experience, I had the opportunity to connect with so many incredible individuals learning what brings them joy. This project has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. I have learned how to increase my emotional intelligence, engage in meaningful conversations with new people, and improve my time management skills. Most importantly, I have seen firsthand how a small act, like reflecting on gratitude, can make a significant impact.

Girls on the Run has shown me the importance of fostering inner strength, and meaningful connections. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with this amazing organization, and I look forward to seeing how this project continues its impact with the 5k event!
